Balkanu auspiced the operational delivery of service for this Community Justice Group based in Mossman. The objective of the program is to help Indigenous offenders and victims within the criminal justice system with services that can improve the quality of life and also to increase cultural understanding in the courts system. Balkanu staff will assist with preparation and presentation of bail/sentencing submissions to the court, attend court sittings and support the victims through the process, provide referrals to legal support services and organise awareness education programs to assist with rehabilitation to meaningful and healthy lifestyles.
Mossman Elders Justice Group is supported by dedicated Elders who have helped to increase awareness and in-depth knowledge of Aboriginal history which has fostered better relationships between the various family groups, the Magistrates Court, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Corrective Services, Douglas Shire Council and other Government services such as ATOD and Health Services.
In collaboration with local service providers, the team at MEJG runs programs to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged Indigenous or those impacted by Domestic Violence and Homelessness. MEJG Lifeskills Program has proved to be very beneficial in providing practical support to our clients in the Mossman community. The educational workshops cover topics like
