Cape York Corporation Pty Ltd (CYC) is trustee of, and manages, the Cape York Aboriginal Charitable Trust (CYACT). A trust deed sets out the purpose of the trust and the kind of activities that CYC can carry out as trustee. As trustee, CYC must act in the interests of the beneficiaries: the Aboriginal people of Cape York.
Balkanu Cape York Development Corporation Pty Ltd is a subsidiary company of CYC.

Cape York Corporation Board
The nineteen directors of Cape York Corporation are appointed from the sub regions: Hope Vale, Cooktown, Yalanji, Laura, Coen, Lockhart River, Injinoo, Umagico, New Mapoon, Kaurareg, Old Mapoon, Napranum, Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, and Kowanyama.
The Executive Director of Balkanu is a director and the remaining positions are appointed from CYLC, Apunipima, and the Cape York Youth Council (CYYC).

In addition to being divided into sub-regions, Cape York is divided into wards. A representative from each ward is nominated to be a director of Balkanu.
The four wards and the communities they cover are:
- Northern Ward - Injinoo, Umagico, New Mapoon, Kaurareg
- Western Ward - Kowanyama, Pormpuraaw, Aurukun, Napranum, Old Mapoon
- Eastern Ward - Hope Vale, Cooktown, Yalanji, Laura, and
- Central Ward - Coen, Lockhart River.
The Executive Director of Balkanu is a director with the remaining positions appointed from Apunipima, CYLC, CYYC, and the Peninsula Regional Council. |
